I discuss that universal constraints operate in early JLEs interlanguage grammars (they need not pay attention to them consciously), and that they ‘subconsciously’ transfer L1 setting for parameterized constraints in L2. Accordingly, the wrong settings require gradual correction (the learners need to turn attention to them consciously).
