In Japan, some of educational music programs are designed especially for children with the intention of fostering children’s interest in music. Such programs often contain the performance of theme music of animation TV programs and famous screen music, as well as the practice time in which participants can conduct an orchestra or they chorus songs together. Although such kind of programs have been carried out throughout the nation for the last several decades, it is not clear whether the audience of orchestra concerts has increased.\nIt seems rather difficult to judge whether such educational music programs are effective in increasing the number of audience of orchestra concerts. In stead of directing its attention to the development of future audience, therefore, this study set the focus on the characteristics of educational music programs which are suitable for making children more interested in classical music (including symphony masterpieces), rather than in popular music such as theme music of animation programs and famous screen music.\nTo accomplish the purpose of this study, the study first overviewed the current conditions and the issues associated with orchestra circles and educational music programs in Japan. Secondly, the study chose Sinfonietta Shizuoka JAPAN, a local-based orchestra, as an example of orchestras because it had been implementing various kinds of educational music programs. In order to identify which programs were effective in fostering participants’ interest in classical music, surveys by questionnaires and interviews were carried out on students, teachers, parents, and regional residents who participated in or were associated with the educational music programs conducted by the orchestra.
