From historical and political viewpoints, it is the French conquest of Algeria in 1830 that enabled Delacroix to intrude into a harem to watch and sketch these women. In the postscript of the collection of short stories daringly entitled Women of Algiers in their Apartment (1980), Assia Djebar, female Algerian francophone writer, calls this painter's Orientalist gaze a \"stolen look\" (regard volé). Trying to seize the eyes and the whispering conversation of these silent women in the painting, adapting a male colonizer's masterpiece for her work written in French, Djebar declares her own position as a female novelist born in a colonized country.
