Ninety-two adults over 60 years completed a questionnaire. Items on social support inquired the number, as well as the degree of satisfaction with people who give and receive support in different situations. Correlational analysis indicated that both past and present social support correlated with self-esteem, and subjective feelings of well-being. Path analysis showed that satisfaction with past social support had a positive effect on subjective feelings of well-being, independently of present social support. These results demonstrate the importance of considering past, as well as present social support, when analyzing the effects of social support on the well-being of elderly people.},
