The first part of this paper tries to outline the present situation of Italian language teaching in Japanese universities, based on the official data of the Ministry of Education and the result of inquiry to Italian language teachers. Roughly speaking, we can estimate that Italian is taught in about 100 universities and learned by more than 10,000 students in Japan. The second part of the paper will clarify the meaning and the purpose of a second foreign language study in the university. The conclusion is that it is essential to give students a cross-cultural experience through language education, so that it can help them to understand the diversity of culture and language in the world. Therefore, the teaching method should put more stress on the aspects of listening and speaking, rather than grammar and translation.
